Marilyn Whitesell

I have been a practicing artist in the state of Indiana since attending school at Indiana University-Bloomington in 1969. I have a BFA and MFA in Fine Arts and have in the past taught in the art departments of Indiana University-Bloomington and Ball State. I am an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University Southeast where I teach Graphic Design.

The main focus of my work has involved the formal use of pattern and the surface design of textiles. The primary medium used to explore this interest has been intaglio printing, papermaking, and collage. Emphasis was placed on abstracting forms into a non-emotional flattened space. There are references to costume, the apparel of men and women and the juxtaposition of geometric and curvilinear symbols and patterns. As an avid collector of early American, Native American, and African, textiles, basketry and pottery, objects that stimulate ideas surround me.

I have been the recipient of an individual artist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Funds were used to develop a series of intaglio prints that depicted an interest in early American homespun textiles.

For the last year I have combined my knowledge of computers graphics with a more personal investigation of combining the patterns and symbols of the past with the female form. By visually sharing life experiences, the response sought should be more emotionally and less formal. I have included slides of past abstractions and more recent representational pieces.

As a former printmaker, it was an easy transition to the layer effects and multiples generated by using the computer as a "new" tool. The recent work relies on the use of scanned objects, both texture and human form. They are printed using an Iris printer and take advantage of the latest in digital techniques.

I have exhibited both nationally and internationally and have works in private and public collections.
