My Midwest roots of rich soil and abundant plant life have lead me to the seduction of clay as an interpretation of nature. Each piece is wheel thrown from smooth white stoneware. I then hand build additional clay to the form and alter by pushing, stretching and scraping the surface. This process involves drying periods between each stage that require a patience that echoes the coaxing of seedlings to sprout and take form. At the last stages of shaping progress, each piece expands with the fluid, plastic nature of the clay to assume it' own unique characteristics and personality. Just as no two petals in nature are the same, neither are my vessels.
Glaze chemistry is an important component of my work. Many hours have been spent testing and developing my own personal glazes that enhance and complete my visual forms adding to their uniqueness.
My recent work continues to be guided by natural organic forms but often incorporate a more emotional story that expresses and interprets the feelings we experience everyday. Some pieces carry the heavy emotions of the confusion, depression, anger or injustice we all encounter. Other pieces express the lighter side of the creative daydreamer in me through the world of fantasy and imagination that puts a smile on my face and renews my soul.
Life is constant change. As the physical changes so does the soul. Each one of us is continually molded as a lump of clay and grows from seed to flourish like all plant life. The trick is to embrace it wholeheartedly with wonder and zeal. We all view his or her world with unique eyes. I hope my view will invoke some sense of knowing within.
